An incredible bird, certainly, a collection of feathers with shapes, colors, textures of the most inspiring!

Whether for tye Saumons Flies, Victorians, nymphs or Drys Flies by roll up Quils of wings feathers for example

There are three main subspecies, East, West and South, all similar, with darker or paler grey parts and slightly smaller southern species.

Starting with the head of the bird, the feathers of the yellow crown or have a slight twist with a dark tip. They are rather steep but will make an interesting set of horns on a Freestyle salmon fly. In addition, they can be grouped and used as a sub-wing. The tiny black feathers of the head that feel like velvet, can be used for the body or in Tags, by grouping them this gives them the appearance of a chenille.

The gray body, neck and back hackles will make excellent body hackles.

There are also applications that make these feathers very useful. The dark chocolate wing quills blend well and are long enough for a 6/0 wing.

The small tips of these feathers will make large wet flies with dark brown wings.

The white feathers of the wings can be dyed any imaginable color and used for flies in the form of whole wings.

There are some golden amazing feathers at the back of the wings that will have interesting uses for the creative tying, or give incredible reflections for Spey flies.

Almost all the feathers of this bird can have an application to produce beautiful flies.
